Postcards from Saint Simons Island

Courtney Byrne, mom of 5 and keen family traveler @travelwewill tells us the best places to go and things to do in her postcards from Saint Simons Island, Georgia.

What To Do

  • Rent Bikes from Ocean Motion – There is a great bike rental spot which had bikes for all different ages and even had bikes with baby/toddler seats on the back and the trailers to pull.
  • Climb the St. Simons Lighthouse – the lighthouse on St Simons Island is beautiful and the (little) museum at the base is really neat too. This time even our littlest (3) was able to climb to the top!
  • Ride Horses at Frederica Stables – this is one of the most beautiful horse farms and has the kindest staff. Whether you want a trail ride, a quick lead line ride or just to visit the horses, this is wonderful spot to stop on your trip to the island.
  • Enjoy the waterfront playground at Pier Village – shops, spots to eat and the BEST playground right along the waterfront.

Where To Shop

Rainy day? There are tons of fun shops on St. Simons. A few favorites: WhipperSnappers Toy Store, GJ Ford Book Store, Drift Wood Soap Company, and Saint Simon Sweets.

Where to Eat

For breakfast or lunch, head to Palmer’s Village Cafe. This spot is perfect for breakfast: all different types of pancakes, great coffee, their famous Chicken Pot Pie omelet and paper table clothes you can color on.

For dinner, head to Barrier Island Brewing. This is a great spot for families and a quick walk from the rental. We loved sitting in the tent outside. Great food and drinks for the adults and excellent kids menu. The staff was friendly and welcoming and it was an overall great dinner out with kids.

And finally for dessert: ice cream at FuseFrozen Co (there are 2 on the island) or Italian Ice from Sunset Slush!

Where to Stay

The Beach View Drive Residence

This spot couldn’t be more convenient for enjoying a trip on Saint Simons. The path to the beach is right outside and the house had plenty of beach chairs, beach toys and towels. You can also easily walk to rent bikes, to lots of places to eat and it’s a quick bike ride to Pier Village. It’s also next door to The Cottage which is a traveling family’s dream neighbor: the best coffee, ice cream, baked goods AND a castle playground.
