A Local Guide to Provence, France

Tina Liversidge, host at The Chemin de Peymeyan Residence in Var, Provence, is a global citizen who has lived in Hong Kong, Singapore, Denmark, France, and currently based out of Edinburgh in Scotland. Married with 2 young adventurous children, she gives us her recommendations for a trip to Fayence and a local guide to Provence

Where To Go in Provence

An aerial view of the village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie in Provence.

If you’re planning a day trip during your stay, we highly recommend setting aside a full day to explore the Gorges du Verdon – it’s one of the most spectacular natural sites in all of France, and a personal favourite of ours.

Known as the “Grand Canyon of Europe,” the gorge offers breathtaking scenery – dramatic limestone cliffs plunging into turquoise waters, winding mountain roads, and countless photo-worthy viewpoints. Whether you choose to hike, rent a kayak on the Verdon River, or simply enjoy the views from above, this outing is always a guest favourite.

Continue on to the charming village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. This beautiful, historic village is renowned for its handcrafted porcelain, and is lovely for a wander. You’ll find pretty artisan shops, lovely cafés and rest, and a gentle waterfall flowing through the heart of the village. It’s a wonderful spot to explore or stop for a quiet moment in the afternoon. For a truly memorable experience, book lunch or dinner at Alain Ducasse’s B&B and gourmet restaurant, La Bastide Moustiers, just outside the village. It’s a hidden gem – intimate, beautiful settings, and absolutely worth the drive. Advance booking is essential, and please be sure to arrive on time – they are quite strict and may turn away late arrivals.

All in all, it’s a day full of natural beauty, Provençal charm, and exquisite cuisine – one we always look forward to.

Where to Eat in Provence

Le France restaurant in Fayence - a recommendation from a local guide to Provence.

One of the true joys of staying at our home here is – apart from dining alfresco whilst enjoying the endless views from our three terraces – discovering the wonderful places to eat nearby: from casual family spots to special-occasion favourites. Whether you’re looking for a long, lazy lunch with a view or an evening of fine dining under the stars, here are some of our personal recommendations if you’re looking for a local guide to Provence eateries:

Au Rendez-Vous, Callian
A laid-back and welcoming spot that’s perfect for a family meal. Expect generous portions, classic Provençal and Italian fare, and a terrace with lovely views of the surrounding hills of Callian and Montauroux. Great for a casual lunch or dinner.

Le Vol à Voile, Fayence
A brilliant choice for families with children. This restaurant is located at the local glider airfield, so little ones will be fascinated watching the silent planes take off and land while you enjoy a relaxed meal. There’s a great atmosphere, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even book a glider ride and catch a bird’s-eye view of Fayence – and maybe even our home!

Le Bis, Fayence
Tucked by the local tennis courts, Le Bis is our go-to for pizzas when you need something quick and easy. Perfect for a no-fuss evening meal – and they offer takeaway if you’d prefer to enjoy it back at the house.

Le Vigne Vincent, Tourrettes
This lovely little wine bar has one of the best views around. Jesper, the friendly owner, curates a superb selection of wines, paired with delicious charcuterie boards and light bites. A perfect midday stop for a peaceful and civilised lunch with a view.

La Pause, Tourrettes
Just next door to Le Vigne Vincent, La Pause Tourrettane is a charming restaurant offering tasty, seasonal dishes for both lunch and dinner. Lovely food, warm atmosphere, and a very convenient location if you’re exploring the little village and its galleries and murals on the village walls.

La Castellaras
Located just down the Chemin from our home, this hilltop restaurant offers sweeping views of the village and a delicious Provençal menu.

Le Deux Rocs, Seillans
Our absolute favourite for a special evening out. The setting is pure Provençal romance – tables are set outdoors by the village fountain, and the food is consistently exceptional. In the summer, the children explore the little lanes between courses while we linger over wine and dessert. A magical place.

Le France, Fayence
A firm local favourite with consistently great food and a welcoming vibe. Be sure to book a table on the terrace for the best experience. Perfect for lunch or dinner, right in the heart of the village.

What to Do in Provence

Château d'Esclans in Provence.

While you’re in the area, here are a couple of experiences we highly recommend:

Perfume Experience in Grasse
A visit to Grasse is a must for anyone interested in the art of perfume. You can take a guided tour and even participate in a perfume-making workshop at either Molinard or Fragonard. Fragonard also features a charming boutique with beautiful merchandise including clothing and homeware.

Vineyard Visits & Wine Tasting
For wine lovers, we highly recommend a visit to Château d’Esclans, the home of the world-renowned Whispering Angel. Their range includes favorites of ours like Rock Angel (rosé) and the exquisite Garrus.

Where to Stay

An outdoor lounge area with views over Provence.

Retreat to The Chemin de Peymeyan Residence – a peaceful countryside property where kids can happily and safely enjoy the half-acre of Mediterranean gardens and private pool. Enjoy alfresco pool-side dining with the outdoor summer kitchen, pizza oven, and Weber barbecue, framed by a scenic landscape: the property has extensive, stunning views stretching out across the Mediterranean coastal mountain range, the Esterel Massif and the surrounding countryside below.

It’s just 5 minutes away from Seillans, voted by The Guardian newspaper (UK) as one of the Top 20 Most Beautiful Villages in France. It’s a 10-minute drive to the village of Fayence, which offers several bakeries, grocery stores, and a wide variety of excellent restaurants, as well as the superb local market days each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
