British interiors travel and lifestyle photographer, Kate Berry visited The Centro Merida Residence in Mexico and gave us her creative review.
I’m now based between LA and Mexico. Experiencing other countries and cultures is my greatest inspiration and I love anywhere colourful and soulful with great light and access to nature and water. I love capturing people and their homes.
I adore Mérida and the Yucatán, the crumbling colonial architecture and 50’s feel. It reminds me of Miami and Cuba, only it’s Mexico! There is so much access to water, beautiful beaches, cenotes, salt lakes…great food, welcoming locals. It feels laid back and peaceful. I love the Coqui Coqui spas and pueblos magicos.
At the Centro Merida Residence, all of the host, Lauren’s, belongings capture what feels like a love letter to Mexico, from the art to the books, to the ceramics, fresh fruit and colorful rooms. I love color and high ceilings and tiles and the Caribbean influence to the city and these touches were felt throughout the home.
The art felt really fun and playful and provided a nice contrast to the sophisticated feeling of the home. I’m a big fan of Jose Garcia’s work (Taller Manos Que Ven), a blind ceramicist from Oaxaca whose work was on display downstairs.
The light was really atmospheric and the scent of the Coqui Coqui Tabacco was very alluring! I loved the master bathroom and bathtub and how luxurious it felt to get ready in the morning.
